Creating A Timeline

Sometimes I get these crazy ideas. And Bill and I miraculously run with them. Gotta love that about Bill, he goes with my ideas! (like packing up two young kids, dog, and everything we own and moving cross country from the San Francisco area to, gulp, the conservative Midwest)

Well, only slightly less insane, my newest idea is to create a giant timeline for the kids to use when learning about history. Lauren, in particular, is fascinated by history. She has read the Little House series books this summer (finishing Little Town on the Prairie currently.) She has also read 4 of these diary-based books that are all based in specific periods in history. (One was about the Dust Bowl, one was about a Pilgrim girl, another was about an immigrant "shirtwaist" seamstress and union formation, and the last was about the Alamo.) We also read a book on the history of counting ... talk about a HUGE span of history!!



Trying to tell her where all these things fall in relation to each other was a challenge. So, thus, my brainstorm of creating a giant timeline. *I* was going to go back to the 1600's .... but Bill, being the anthropology major and all, said NO, lets go back to 10,000BC! OK.......


But I figured why not? It can help them understand so much about the development of society. And give us so much more to talk about as a family. When did man invent the wheel? When did the Romans "rule the world?" When did man walk on the moon? When were Mom and Dad born? It all has some sort of relevance now!
