We have some dead trees in our back yard. So today Bill donned his mini-chainsaw, and cut one of them down. BTW - this is the 5th tree we have had to cut down since moving in here. We have a few more on our list still. They are falling like, well, dead trees!

We had to tie some rope to the tree to "encourage" it to fall in just the right spot - in our yard (not the neighbors) and not on top of other live trees or our bird bath stump. Bill rigged up this quite elaborate system ...

a bit overkill if you ask me, but it kept everything safe that we wanted kept safe. (read: there were some broken willow branches, but that is OK with us)

While we tied and cut, the girls waited. They were very excited to chop down yet another tree. Apparently they have not been tortured by this activity each and every Sunday morning for their entire youth. Oh wait, am I projecting a bit here?

Anyway, Barbara and Abby (their dolls) joined up, and they four of them waited and waited and waited patiently while the tree was wrangled to the ground.
Once it fell, they ran over to examine everything. The stump, the branches that broke, the sawdust, everything!

The rotting tree. It has been dead for over a year now - we just have been slow to take it down! Fungus all over it!

All that was left was to cut the tree up and stack the wood under our deck. Ahh, warm fires are in our grasp this winter.

The girls, however, had some other ideas as to how the wood should be put to use. They built a fort and playground for their dolls.
All our efforts stacked up here. Well, there are still some large pieces that need to be split before we put them away. Bill has a co-worker that is going to come over and let us use his wood splitter. No axe chopping for us. Really? None of that, huh? Wow -that sure makes chopping trees a whole lot easier!
