Today all three families got together to do some fall work in our garden. The frost has killed off most of the plants, but some tomatoes, peppers, & raspberries have survived (via covering with tarps) and carrots, beets, and chard are frost-proof, so that all survives too. Anyway, we pulled up zucchini and yellow squash plants, butternut squash plants (what the dear did not eat!) pulled out some green bean plants, got rid of the eggplant plants and a few of the tomato plants that did not get covered by tarps. We also harvested the last of the butternut squash, pulled up the carrots and beats, and dug up the potatoes. We picked some larger peppers, and picked any of the tomatoes that were showing signs of turning red.
After harvesting, we set to work on the beginning of enlarging our garden area. We use old carpeting to help remove grass and other plant matter in areas we want to convert to new garden. It works really well! Water goes through the carpet, but not sunlight, so no plants grow, and the worms eat away at the roots. So today we moved a bunch of carpeting to another area we plan on enlarging for next year. Only problem ... wet carpet is very very heavy!!
While we adults slaved away, the kids enjoyed eating fresh raspberries, playing on the climbing structure, chasing birds in the field, watching us through the fence, and generally have a very good time.
We all then enjoyed a delicious harvest lunch of veggie-stew, meatballs, salad & bread. YUM! I have really enjoyed our gardening experience this summer, and am excited to see what changes we invoke for next summer.
