Lauren and Annika decided to fly their plastic grocery bag kites this evening. Lauren made her kite 4 years ago in preschool, yet she still has it! Annika has lost hers, but we were able to remake it. (Just barely, as I have very few lying around the house now that I have been religiously using my own bags.) Lauren eventually got the idea to make parachutes out of the kite, and let it drop off the deck.
After figuring out that she needed more weight, she ran inside and attached Barbara and Abby (their favorite,and smallest, dolls) to make parachutes and take their dolls for a spin. They carefully tied some yard to a bag and to their dolls.
After a few quick tests to be sure their dolls would indeed float, they decided to really test their inventions off the back of our deck.
The south side had the tallest drop,and actually worked the best to get the shoot to open up for them. It was, however, very difficult to get a picture in the evening light.
Lauren even tried to test her theory off the pool ladder. This made me smile - lots of hands on science going on here with this whole project. She adjusted her parachute and methods many times in the course of an hour. They really were in to this and had a lot of fun. Too bad night was rapidly approaching on us.
I did, however, feel really bad for the poor dolls, because they had some pretty hard THUMPS as they pummeled to the ground over and over and over again!
